Anna Finocchiaro (born March 31, 1955 in Modica , Sicily ) is an Italian lawyer and politician of the Partito Democratico (PD). She was a member of the Italian Senate from 2006 to 2018 . She was also Minister for Equal Opportunities from 1996–98 and Minister for Relations with Parliament from 2016–18.

Life

After studying law at the University of Catania , Finocchiaro joined the Banca d'Italia in 1981 . From 1982 to 1985 she was a district judge in Leonforte , then until 1987 a public prosecutor at the district court of Catania .

In 1987 she entered the Chamber of Deputies in Rome for the Italian Communist Party , and from 1988 to 1995 she was also a city councilor in Catania. From 1991 she belonged to the successor to the Communist Party, the Partito Democratico della Sinistra (PDS; Democratic Left Party) or the Democratici di Sinistra (DS; Left Democrats), and sat for them in the Chamber of Deputies until 2006 (five legislative periods). From 1996 to 1998 Finocchiaro was Minister for Equality in the Prodi I cabinet . From 1998 to 2001 she headed the Justice Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.

In 2006 she moved into the Senate for the party alliance L'Ulivo made up of DS and other center-left parties, where she became chairwoman of the L'Ulivo faction . The L'Ulivo parties merged in 2007 to form the center-left rallying party Partito Democratico , whose founding committee they belonged to. She remained chairwoman of the PD parliamentary group in the Senate until 2013. For the regional election in her home region of Sicily, she ran in 2008 as the top candidate of the center-left alliance of PD, La Sinistra - L'Arcobaleno and Italia dei Valori for the office of President of the regional government, but lost 30.4% of the vote to Raffaele Lombardo from the center-right block.

From 2013 to 2016 Finocchiaro was chair of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Affairs, which discussed among other things a comprehensive reform of the Italian Senate and a new electoral law. From December 2016 to June 1, 2018, she was Minister for Relations with Parliament in the Gentiloni cabinet . In the general election in 2018 it has not raced for more, bringing its parliamentary membership ended after three decades.
