Livia Turco (born February 13, 1955 in Cuneo ) is an Italian politician ( PCI , (P) DS , PD ). She was Minister of Social Affairs from 1996 to 2001 and Minister of Health from 2006 to 2008.

Life and political career

Turco is a primary school teacher by profession. She began her political career with the Partito Comunista Italiano (PCI) and was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the first time in 1987 . She was a member of parliament until 2013: during the 2006-08 legislative period as a senator , otherwise as a member of the Chamber of Deputies. In 1991 she advocated the transformation of the Communist Party into the Partito Democratico della Sinistra (PDS; Democratic Left Party).

From 1996 to 2001, Turco was the non- portfolio minister responsible for social cohesion in the cabinets of Romano Prodi , Massimo D'Alema and Giuliano Amato . Turco was jointly responsible with the then Interior Minister Giorgio Napolitano for drawing up the immigration law of March 6, 1998, which is therefore also called Legge Turco-Napolitano . In the regional elections in Piedmont in 2000, she was the top candidate of the center-left alliance L'Ulivo , but lost 39.5% to the incumbent Enzo Ghigo from Forza Italia .

In Prodi's second cabinet , she was Minister of Health from May 2006 to May 2008. Since the left-wing Democrats merged with other center-left parties, Turco has belonged to the Partito Democratico and was a member of its founding committee. Within the party, she was a leading representative of the left-wing group A Sinistra , which supported Pier Luigi Bersani in the 2009 election of party leader . From 2008 to 2010 she was the spokeswoman for the now opposition PD parliamentary group in the Social Committee.

In 2017 Turco was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .
