Maria Rosaria Bindi , called Rosy Bindi (born February 12, 1951 in Sinalunga , province of Siena ) is an Italian politician and one of the initiators of the Democratic Party , of which she was president from 2009 to 2013. She was also Minister of Health from 1996 to 2000, Minister for Family from 2006 to 2008 and Vice-President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies from 2008 to 2013 .

Political career

After studying political science at the private university LUISS in Rome, Rosy Bindi was the assistant to the renowned administrative lawyer Vittorio Bachelet , who was murdered on February 12, 1980 in her presence by the Red Brigades at the Roman University of La Sapienza . She then worked as a research assistant at the University of Siena until 1989 .

She was involved in the Italian youth association of Catholic Action , of which she was deputy chairman from 1984 to 1989. In 1989 she became a member of Democrazia Cristiana (DC) and ran successfully for the European Parliament , of which she was a member until 1994. She was a member of the Christian Democratic EPP parliamentary group (1992–94 member of the parliamentary group's executive committee) and initially deputy chairwoman of the development committee (1989–92), then chairwoman of the petitions committee (1992–94).

After the dissolution of the DC, she joined the Partito Popolare Italiano , as whose representative she was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 1994. As a supporter of the center-left alliance L'Ulivo , formed under Romano Prodi , she became Minister of Health in Prodi 's first cabinet in 1996 and also held this position in the two subsequent governments of Massimo D'Alema .
