Istituto Affari Internazionali , IAI for short (German: Institute for International Relations ) is a private non-profit organization, think tank on European integration and political science research institute in Rome.
history
The IAI was founded in 1965 on the initiative of Altiero Spinelli , the first director, and with the support of the Fondazione Olivetti, the cultural and political association Il Mulino, the Centro studi Nord e Sud and the Ford Foundation. Spinelli built the international research center along the lines of the Anglo-Saxon think tank : a private organization with a flexible structure that differs from university institutes and research centers of public institutions and ministries, but is able to work efficiently with the government, public administration, leading national economic actors as well as the most prominent foreign research centers to interact and work together.
Since 1991 the institute has been housed in the elegant Palazzo Rondinini, which dates back to the Baroque age of Rome in the 16th century. and in which the most important events of the institution take place. The IAI has three primary goals: research, elaboration of political ideas and strategies, and training and promoting understanding of international problems.

The institute mainly deals with the following research areas:

The research work is carried out by a scientific team composed of around 40 researchers; 10 of them act as project or division managers. Most of the research projects are implemented in cooperation with foreign institutes of a similar structure.
In addition, the institute is an active member and occasionally also the initiator of various important international research networks:

- TEPSA (Trans European Policy Studies Association)
Publications
The institute publishes various specialist journals and monographs:
- The International Spectator , a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal (peer-reviewed articles) on international politics in English, published by Routledge (Taylor & Francis Group)
- Global Politics and Security (German: Globale Politik und Sicherheit), a collection of books either in English, on current issues in international politics and contemporary history, by Peter Lang
- IAI Research Studies and Quaderni IAI (German: IAI research work and IAI booklets), two collections of books either in English or in Italian, on issues of international politics and economics that the institute deals with, as well as on other particularly topical topics
- IAI Papers and Documenti IAI , working papers in English or in Italian
- IAI Commentaries , Op-eds in English
- AffarInternazionali (German: International Relations ), an online magazine for politics, strategy and economics
