The Flathead Lake is a lake in the northwest of the US state of Montana .
It is the largest lake in Montana and the largest freshwater lake in the western United States. The lake is one of the cleanest lakes of its size. Flathead Lake is named after the Flathead Indian tribe , a sub-tribe of the Salish language group . Today almost half of the lake belongs to the Flathead reservation . The lake used to be known as Salish Lake , so it was named after the Flathead Indians' own name. The lake is bordered by the Mission Mountains to the east and the Salish Mountains to the west . The mild climate in the Flathead Depression is unusual . The main tributaries are the Flathead River and the Swan River .
Flathead Lake Monster
Similar to the Loch Ness monster , a sea monster is said to live in Flathead Lake , the "Flathead Lake Monster". First the being was supposedly seen by the Salish Indians. Most of the sightings date from 1933, when 78 people claimed to have seen the cryptid . 25 of them described the animal as a twelve meter long sturgeon , the rest as a 20 meter long sea snake .
