The CM-32 Armored Vehicle ( Chinese  雲豹裝甲車 , Pinyin Yunbao Zhuāngjiǎchē  - " clouded leopard -Panzer") is an eight-wheel (8 × 8) vehicle platform from Taiwanese production. The armored car is a further development of the CM-31.

history

As part of a military reform in 2001, the armed forces of the Republic of China decided to reduce the number of troops, which should go hand in hand with a significant increase in the mobility of the remaining troops. This led to an end to the discussion within the military as to whether the next generation tanks should be wheeled or tracked. Since mobility had unrestricted priority, it was decided to use armored vehicles. Swimming ability was waived because Taiwan has a very good infrastructure.

The development of the CM-32 was started by the Irish company Timoney Technology Limited of Ireland in 2002. The company has experience in military vehicle and heavy machinery construction, including the Terrex project. Various Taiwanese companies (such as China Steel ) and universities were also involved in the development. The first prototype, called P0, was completed on September 30, 2002. It served as a test platform for the chassis, the steering and the installation of components. Both P0 and the second prototype P1 were equipped with a Caterpillar C9 diesel engine with 400 hp. P1 was used for weapon and engine tests from December 30, 2003; development was completed on June 15, 2004. On August 30, 2004, the third prototype P2 was completed for operational tests. At the end of 2004, work began on prototype P3, which, unlike P0 to P2, corresponded to the series standard and with which the production processes, maintenance and logistics were tested, as well as a new Caterpillar C12 diesel engine with 450 hp. The work on this was completed in 2005, and P3 also received ergonomic improvements. Series production started in 2007. The only users of the vehicle are the Taiwanese armed forces, which originally ordered 600 CM-32s. As part of a 2001 reform of the Taiwanese armed forces, the CM-32 is set to replace around 700 outdated M41 tanks .

technology

All systems of the armored car are completely digital and use SAE J1939 as network protocol , global positioning system is available.

mobility

The vehicle platform is powered by a civil Caterpillar C12 diesel engine with 450 hp, which is also used in trucks . The Allison Transmission transmission has 6 forward gears and one reverse gear. The engine and transmission are connected to one unit and can be lifted out of the vehicle together. The vehicle has permanent all-wheel drive and can accelerate from 0 to 32 km / h in eight seconds; the braking distance from 70 km / h to 0 is 35 meters. The maximum angle of inclination is 60 °, the slope angle 30 °, the trench crossing ability 2 m and the climbing ability 0.7 m. Run-flat tires from Michelin of the type X395 / 85 R20XML, tire pressure control system and anti-lock braking system are available. The driver's center angle mirror can be replaced by a thermal imaging device for driving in poor visibility or at night. The tank has an electronic accelerator pedal , central locking and a rear camera for reversing. The turning radius is 11 meters.

protection

All versions have NBC protection, a fire suppression system for the fighting and engine compartments is standard. The vehicles have a V-shaped underbody to protect against mine explosions and booby traps . The mine protection is very high with up to 12 kg TNT under the tub (STANAG 4569 Level Vb). Seats are attached to the vehicle roof or side wall and are well padded. The basic structure of the tank is made of armor steel, on which modular armor plates are attached. While the prototypes still had modular composite armor made of ceramic and sheet steel, the series vehicles are only equipped with armored steel plates. The armor can withstand exploding 155 mm artillery shells at a distance of 20 m from the side, 12.7 x 99 mm NATO ammunition at 1,000 meters, and from the front at 200 meters. The interior of the vehicle is lined with Kevlar mats as a spall liner. A smoke throw system with 2 × 6 cups of 66 mm each is available.

The CM-32 Yunpao has various measures designed to reduce its probability of detection. This includes a digital camouflage pattern , a silencer for the engine and rubber aprons on the top of the wheel arches, which are supposed to keep dust swirls low. The vehicle is equipped with two separate electrical circuits, one for the vehicle (engine, dashboard , on-board computer, etc.) and the other for the use of weapons (turret rotation, fire control, vision systems, etc.). The power circuit for the use of weapons is equipped with an additional accumulator so that you can remain in wait (silent watch) for a long time without leaving the engine running.
