Remote controlled weapon station
A remote-controlled weapon station (also known as remote-controlled weapon station) is a light weapon system that is operated from inside a military vehicle. The built-in weapons are machine guns , automatic grenade launchers or light anti- aircraft or anti-tank guided weapons . In contrast, a turret is heavier and also holds a larger gun.
The construction saves a heavy armored dome, and the shooter does not have to leave the relatively protected interior of the vehicle through a hatch to operate the weapon, as is the case with a rotating ring mount . In the case of mechanical weapon stations, the shooter swings and directs the weapon with his muscular strength; in the case of electrical weapon stations, this is done by electric motors . Aiming is done either through a periscope or through optoelectronic sensors (daylight video camera , thermal imaging camera , image intensifier ) which transmit the target image to a screen .
In addition, the weapon station can have further equipment features, for example weapon stabilization to be able to fight targets at full speed, laser rangefinder with an automatic correction based on the ballistic curve , headlights or smoke throwing system .
Due to their low weight, remote-controlled weapon stations can be installed subsequently / additionally or alternatively.
