General

The M240 is a license replica of the Belgian FN MAG . It was adopted into the equipment of the US Army in 1976 after the MAG prevailed against the M60 E2 in a comparison test . Manufacturing takes place in the United States at FN Manufacturing, Inc. in Columbia , South Carolina , a US subsidiary of the Belgian Fabrique Nationale Herstal .

With the M240 there is no possibility to choose between different firing sequences, the rifle can only be fired fully automatically. It is very often seen on vehicles and is then fitted with a double handle and operated by a thumb trigger. For normal use, a normal trigger with a shaft is used.

The weapon is mainly used by the infantry and is highly regarded for its reliability. Another advantage is the standardization among NATO members.
