The Saur 1 is an 8 × 8 armored personnel carrier (other name Zimbru 2006 ) from Romanian production, which was produced by the vehicle manufacturer Automecanica Moreni . The vehicle was developed by ROMARM in the early 2000s , and the successor model presented a short time later is called the Saur 2 .
History of origin
At the beginning of the 2000s, ROMARM began development work for a multi-axis armored car that was tailored to the needs of the Romanian armed forces. By the NATO -membership Romania in 2004 an extensive modernization of the army stood by. At the end of 2006, ROMARM completed the first prototype of the Saur 1, and in 2007 the model was presented at the Expomil 2007 armaments fair. Neither the Saur 1 nor the improved Saur 2 version was introduced into the Romanian armed forces. Romania's participation in the occupation of Iraq from 2003 to 2011 resulted in an urgent need for modern wheeled armored vehicles. Technologically advanced vehicles from Mowag 's Piranha family were introduced instead.

The shell of the Saur 1 is made entirely of welded steel, which protects the occupants from projectiles up to caliber 7.62 mm and shrapnel . According to ROMARM, the vehicle has a mine protection system that complies with STANAG 4569 level 1. The SAUR 1 can be equipped with an additional armor set that increases the STANAG 4569 protection level to level 2. The design of the Saur 1 is in line with the latest 8 × 8 armored vehicle developments in other countries, in which the driver is positioned at the front left and the drive unit at the front right. The interior extends to the rear of the case; the exit is through two rear doors. The driver and the commander have a total of three periscopes for forward observation, the middle periscope is equipped with night vision equipment. The remote-controlled weapon station is located on the roof of the Saur 1, which can be equipped with a machine gun or machine cannons of caliber 7.61 mm, 12.7 mm, 20 mm or 30 mm. The vehicle reached a maximum of 10 km / h when driving in the water. A bilge pump is installed in order to be able to pump any water that may have entered the vehicle in swimming mode. The drive in the water is carried out by two ducted propellers at the rear of the vehicle.
