Tatrapan is the name of a military vehicle family of six-wheeled (6 × 6), all-wheel drive , amphibious armored vehicles from Slovakia , which was developed and manufactured in the early 1990s.
Development history
The armored transporter Tatrapan was developed as a replacement for the outdated OT-64 wheeled armored vehicle, which resulted from a Czechoslovak-Polish cooperation. A Slovak consortium of companies took over the further development of the Tatrapans after Slovak independence. The first vehicles entered service in the Slovak Army in 1994 . By 2009 around 50 vehicles were built for Slovakia and the Cypriot National Guard . The Slovak armed forces used the Tatrapan on various missions abroad.
technology
The Tatrapan is an armored, all-terrain three-axle wheeled vehicle, the versions of which are all based on the chassis of the Czech Tatra 815 . All Tatrapan versions have armored, foldable driver's cabs and armored, relatively easily interchangeable box bodies behind them, which essentially differ between the respective versions. The two front axles of the all-wheel-drive vehicle are steerable, the steering is done mechanically with a hydraulic steering booster. It is powered by an air-cooled 12-cylinder turbo diesel engine of the type T3-930-55 from Tatra with 275 kW (369 hp) or, in newer models, by a Deutz 6-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 323 kW (450 PS). The as planetary gear executed transfer case between the two front axles and the rear axle has a gear ratio of 1.8: 1st In addition to the transfer case, there are three axle differentials. The independent suspension of the pendulum axles takes place at the front by means of leaf springs, but pneumatically at the rear.
The Tatrapan's armor is designed to withstand horizontal fire with 7.62 mm hard core projectiles at a distance of 100 m from any direction. The chassis should also withstand horizontal fire with 7.62 mm hard core ammunition, but at only 500 m. The ambulance version of the Tatrapan is also lined with special materials to reduce external radiation.
