The Defense Research and Development Organization ( DRDO for short ) is an authority of the Republic of India that is responsible for research and development for the military and is based in New Delhi . It was created in 1958 through the merger of the "Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Productions" with the Indian "Defense Science Organization". It is under the administrative control of the Indian Ministry of Defense.

With a network of 52 laboratories engaged in the development of defense technologies in various fields such as aerospace , armaments , electronics , ground combat , life sciences , materials science , missiles and marine systems, DRDO is the largest and most diversified research organization in India. The organization directly employs around 5,000 scientists from the Defense Research & Development Service (DRDS) and around 25,000 other scientific, technical and support staff.

Incidents

  • On January 11, 1999, a Hindustan Aeronautics HAL 748 of the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (military registration number H-2175 ) crashed 2.5 kilometers from the naval air base in Arakkonam (INS Rajali) during the approach . The machine had been modified with a radar antenna dome, which apparently collapsed on approach. All 8 occupants, four crew members and four passengers, perished.
