Arakkonam ( Tamil : அரக்கோணம் Arakkōṇam [ ˈaɾəkːoːɳʌm ], also Arakonam, Arkonam ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 78,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Arakkonam is located 75 kilometers west of Chennai (Madras) in the Vellore district in northern Tamil Nadu. The next largest city is Kanchipuram 27 kilometers south, while the district capital Vellore is 77 kilometers west. Arakkonam is the capital of the talk Arakkonam in the district of Vellore.

81 percent of the residents of Arakkonam are Hindus , 10 percent Muslim and 8 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 86 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 10 percent speak Telugu and 3 percent speak Urdu .

The railway lines from Chennai to Bangalore and from Chennai to Mumbai converge at Arakkonam Station ( Arakkonam Junction ) . In addition, a branch line branches off here via Kanchipuram to Chengalpattu . Arakkonam station is served by numerous long-distance trains and the Chennaier suburban railway. Arakkonam is home to a major Indian Railways depot . There is also a military airfield of the Indian Navy in Arakkonam .
