Chengalpattu ( Tamil : செங்கல்பட்டு Ceṅkalpaṭṭu [ ˈtʃeŋɡəlpaʈːɯ ]; formerly Anglicizing Chingleput , Chinglepet or Chingelpet ) is a city in the north of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 63,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

It is located on the Palar River in the Kanchipuram district , 33 kilometers southeast of the district capital Kanchipuram and around 50 kilometers southwest of Chennai (Madras). The city has medical and other educational institutions affiliated with the University of Madras .

85 percent of the population of Chengalpattu are Hindus , 7 percent Christian and 6 percent Muslim . The main language, as in all of Tamil Nadu, is Tamil, which is spoken by 85 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 9 percent speak Telugu , 3 percent Urdu and another 3 percent speak other languages.
