The Uralwagonsawod ( Russian Уралвагонзавод , literally Uralwaggonwerk ) is a Russian engineering and armaments company in Nizhny Tagil .

history

The plant was built during the five-year plan from 1931 to 1936 and initially produced heavy freight cars for the Soviet railways - the first were delivered on October 11, 1936. During the Second World War , the Ural Wagonsavod became the largest tank factory in the world after it was merged with the Kharkov locomotive works "Comintern", which was moved here . It provided more than 30,000 T-34 - tank out.

After the Second World War, the company concentrated again on the production of railroad cars , but broadened its product range. It continued to produce military goods, agricultural machinery, construction machinery and other things, but also took on orders for space travel.

Today the company is known worldwide for the production of Russian main battle tanks such as the T-72 and the current model T-14 ; The latest development projects and new types of vehicle concepts are in competition with western military production on the world market. Uralwagonzavod thus plays an important role for the Russian export economy .

The company also includes the Ural Transmash (including the construction of self-propelled guns and mine-laying tanks ) and Zavod Nomer 9 ( plant number 9 , including the construction of guns) in Yekaterinburg .

In May 2005, Eduard Ergartowitsch Rossel , the then governor of Sverdlovsk, announced plans for the company to be gradually privatized from 2006 onwards. However, the existence of these plans was questioned by Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov in November 2005 . I.

In 2011, the majority of the company's shares in the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant (TschTS-Uraltrak) were bought.

In the summer of 2011, the company was on a list from 21 to 2017 [obsolete] of partially or fully privatized companies that Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov had presented to President Dmitry Medvedev . Thereafter, 75% plus one share should remain in state ownership.

In May 2015, there were applications for bankruptcy and state aid for up to 15 billion rubles (at that time 240 million euros).
