The T-14 (internal designation T-99, development index Object 148 ) is the most modern Russian main battle tank . It has been developed since 2010 and is intended to replace the T-90 in the Russian Army . It was presented to the public at the parade on the 70th anniversary of the Red Army's victory over the German Reich on May 9, 2015 in Moscow . For cost reasons, only the construction of a few units was initially commissioned; the previous T-90 and modernized T-72 tanks remain the backbone of the Russian army.

The T-14 is based on the universal tracked vehicle platform Armata of the arms company Uralwagonzavod . It is understood as a further development of the test models Object-195 and Object-640 and inherited the new unmanned tower system from them. The cooperation with western vehicle manufacturers led to a further technological leap. For example, from around 2005 until the Western sanctions came into force in 2014, French and Italian arms companies maintained lively contacts and cooperations with Russian companies and Russian state institutions. The crew (commander, gunner, driver) is housed in a compact room , in the tub bow directly behind the strong bow armor, and a classic impact hit in the tower should therefore not necessarily lead to the death of the crew. The driver's seat has been moved from the center back to the left side, the commander sits on the driver's right and has an exit hatch in the tub roof. The weapon system in the tower is remote-controlled and the smooth-barreled cannon is loaded fully automatically. Compared to the T-90 and its predecessors T-80 and T-72 , the tub was lengthened and an additional pair of castors was installed. The drive is a support roller drive with seven rollers and four support rollers on each side. The drive wheels are at the stern, the guide rollers at the front of the vehicle. The chain is a connector chain that can be equipped with rubber pads. A hydropneumatic chassis is used . The hull shape is similar to the wedge shape of its predecessors, the hull or the additional armor attached to it is much less rugged.

According to a British staff officer, the T-14 is the most advanced main battle tank in the world.

Armament

Details of the armament of the T-14 are not known due to the secrecy. The T-14 prototypes that were presented at the parade on May 9, 2015, have a 125 mm smoothbore gun 2A82-1M as their main armament . This weapon is a further development of the previously used 2A46 - tank cannon with improved precision. Because of the unmanned tower, the cannon does not require a smoke extractor . The combat set is 40 rounds, with 32 rounds as ready-to-use ammunition in an automatic loader. The tank is able to fire long-range tube guided missiles for fighting tanks and aircraft.

As secondary armament, the vehicles shown on May 9, 2015 were equipped with a remote-controlled weapon station with a 7.62 mm MG type PKTM (6P7К) with 2000 rounds. In the later production vehicles, the 125 mm smooth barrel cannon is to be replaced by the 2A83-152 mm smooth barrel cannon. Likewise, according to some sources, the series vehicles are to be equipped with a remote-controlled, axially parallel weapon station with a 12.7 mm cord machine gun ( GRAU index 6P49) with 300 rounds. Other sources also speculate about a 30mm automatic cannon and 12.7mm machine gun.

drive

The drive will be the 12N360 X12 diesel engine from the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant , which has an output of around 1,103 kW (1,500 hp).

Armor

Compared to the previous models, more attention was paid to armor and mine protection.

The T-14 offers a frontal protection level of over 900 mm RHA equivalent.

Status and introduction

Since the first presentation, contradicting information about the planned number of pieces and the launch date of the T-14 has been made time and again. On the occasion of the first presentation in 2015, the Russian military reported that 20 T-14 tanks are in the test phase of the Ministry of Defense and that around 2,300 T- 14s are to be produced for the Russian army by 2020 . Such an extensive production was neither financially nor temporally possible. Instead, the Ministry of Defense stated in 2016 that procurement of only 100 T-14s (including the prototypes) was initially planned, as the priority was to modernize the older T-80 and T-90 tanks. At the end of 2016 this number was first corrected to 70 and then back to 100 vehicles. According to the Ministry of Defense, the number of T-14s it believes should be procured depending on the situation. At the beginning of 2018, the Russian Deputy Defense Minister Borissov stated that a possible series production would not be decided before 2020 because the testing of the T-14 prototypes would not be completed before the end of 2019. In February 2018, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed an order of 32 T-14 for a tank battalion and 100 armored personnel carriers T-15 for three mot.-Schützenbataillo ne for further testing. In December 2018, Borissow announced that the T-14 and Kurganez-25 will not be produced in series until further notice. In January 2020 it was announced that a contract had been signed between the manufacturer and the Russian Defense Ministry for the delivery of a total of 132 T-14 and T-15 by the end of 2022.
