The Falaj-2- class designates a patrol boat- class of the Navy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Mission profile

The most important tasks of the Falaj 2 class patrol boats are patrol service, maritime surveillance, reconnaissance and combat against sea and land targets in national and international missions. In addition, one of the requirements is good self-protection against sea and air targets. A special feature is the noticeably minimized radar reflection surface of the design, which gives it special camouflage properties. In addition, great importance was attached to good accommodation and safety of the crew.

development

The Falaj-2 class is based on the Italian design of the Diciotti-class patrol boat of the Italian Coast Guard . The Diciotti class, for its part, is a further development of the speedboat design of the Saettia class from the Fincantieri shipyard .

The contract for the patrol boats was signed in 2009, according to other sources in January 2010. It included the option of two more boats to be sold by Etihad Ship Building in Abu Dhabi, a newly agreed joint venture between the Italian Fincantieri and the locally based Melara Middle East and Al Fattan Ship Industry are to be built. Technology transfer to the UAE is part of the agreement.

The type boat Ganthoot , named after the area near Abu Dhabi , was launched on January 25, 2011 in the Fincantieri shipyard in Muggiano ( La Spezia ). The second unit is expected to be launched in mid-2012 and delivered at the end of 2012
