The Abu Dhabi class includes a corvette of the Navy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is intended to be used in addition to patrol and sea reconnaissance tasks, above all for submarine hunting .

Mission profile

Due to the increased threat in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, the Navy of the United Arab Emirates is expanding its capabilities for operations away from the coastal waters.

The most important task of the Abu Dhabi class will be patrol service, maritime surveillance, reconnaissance and combat of sea and land targets in national and international operations. One focus is the coverage of the submarine hunting capabilities of the United Arab Emirates Navy. In addition, one of the requirements is good self-protection against sea, submarine and air targets. The minimized radar reflective surface of the design takes into account the current standard for camouflage ability.

development

The Abu Dhabi class is based on the Cigala Fulgosi class (or "Comandanti class") of the Italian Navy . The construction was agreed in 2009 with the option of a second corvette. The units in this class have a stealth design .

The hull of the namesake of the class, the Abu Dhabi , was built by Fincantieri in the shipyard in Riva Trigoso ( Genoa ) and fully equipped after the transfer by pontoon in Muggiano ( La Spezia ).

The ship was christened on February 15, 2011, on the same day with the keel laying of the first patrol boat of the Falaj-2 class and the first metal cut for the second boat of the same class.

units

The class has so far only consisted of the type ship that was handed over to the Navy of the United Arab Emirates on January 8, 2013 together with the “Ghantut” of the Falaj-2 class . The option of a second ship was agreed when the contract was signed.
