The San Giorgio class is a landing ship class (Engl. Landing Platform Dock - LPD) of the Italian Navy . The class consists of three ships put into service between 1988 and 1994. The third ship, the San Giusto , is a modified version, sometimes referred to as a separate class. There is also another ship for the Algerian Navy .
draft
These ships, built by Fincantieri in Riva Trigoso, have a civil ro-ro design with a corrugated deck and a continuous flight deck . They are similar in several ways to the much larger American Wasp class . They can accommodate 330 fully equipped marines , up to 34 armored vehicles, five multi-purpose landing craft, up to 170 tons of ammunition and special equipment and four helicopters of the type Sea King or EH-101 . Modernization work was carried out on the first two ships, including an extension and widening of the flight deck. In these cases, the 76/62 Compact ship gun had to be removed.
The landing ship San Giusto is also designed for civil defense tasks and has an on-board hospital with several operating theaters. In addition, it has special command and communication facilities and can, for example, accommodate an appropriate management team in the event of amphibious operations or disaster situations. The ship is also used as a training ship by the Naval Academy in Livorno .
The Algerian ship is longer (142.9 m), wider (21.5 m) and heavier (8,800 tons max.), Has more modern operational command systems and stronger armament.
units
All three ships of the class are subordinate to an amphibious operations squadron ( COMGRUPNAV 3 ) in Brindisi and usually support the San Marco Brigade .
