history

The Kreissparkasse Herzogtum Lauenburg was established on January 1st, 1940 with the official name "Kreissparkasse des Kreises Herzogtum Lauenburg in Ratzeburg".

At this point in time, she not only looked back on over 100 years of history of the savings bank system in the region, but also on over 30 years of discussion about the establishment of a district-wide financial institution supported by the district council. The establishment only marked the beginning of a development to a district-wide savings bank, which only reached its end with the merger of Schwarzenbeker Verbandssparkasse (1987) and Möllner Sparkasse (2001).

The nationwide discussions about the reorganization of the savings bank system and the creation of central institutions became louder after the devastating banking crisis of 1931. In the district of the Duchy of Lauenburg, however, the cities resisted the merger, because they feared losing design opportunities and a source of income. In 1937 the discussion entered a new phase when the district lost its special position in the financial sector due to the dissolution of the state association . The city of Geesthacht was added to the district area as a result of the Greater Hamburg Act .

By decree of the Reich Minister of Economics Walther Funk of December 28, 1939, the conversion of the Landesbank into the "Kreissparkasse des Herzogtum Lauenburg in Ratzeburg" was ordered on January 1, 1940. At the same time, the savings and loan bank of the city of Ratzeburg, the savings bank of the city of Lauenburg / Elbe , the Steinhorster savings and loan bank and the Sparkasse zu Büchen -Bahnhof were integrated into the new savings bank. The business area of the new facility was heavily discussed in advance. The Möllner Sparkasse and the Schwarzenbeker Verbandssparkasse remained independent for the time being. In the city of Mölln, however, the Kreissparkasse took over the existing Landesbank branch as its own branch, while the Landesbank branch in Schwarzenbek was given up.
