Characteristics
The tank is unarmed, it is only equipped with a smoke throw system. It is built on the six-wheeled piranha armored personnel carrier.
The four-man crew consists of a driver, a commander, a doctor and a unit paramedic . The doctor and the paramedic are responsible for the patients in the rear part of the vehicle and the driver and the commander are responsible for the vehicle. The driver and the commander are also trained as unit paramedics. In order to receive training on this vehicle, you have to be drafted as a unit medic / tank driver.
Patient care is possible in the following constellations: 1–3 patients lying down / 2 patients lying down and 3 sitting / 6 patients sitting. The medical equipment is equivalent to a civilian ambulance.
Due to its light armor, the lack of armament and the medical service role, the medical tank cannot engage in combat with battle tanks . The operational doctrine stipulates that wounded soldiers should be transported from the battlefield as quickly as possible and with the least possible danger. After the patient has been rescued, the vehicle should then withdraw immediately, throwing smoke.
The Federal Department of Defense has the vehicle under the type license no. 40-0000 307, data sheet no. / Code: 35'046, designation: San Pz 6x6 gl Piranha.
