Swiss Military Museum Full
The Swiss Military Museum Full is a privately run museum in the Swiss municipality of Full-Reuenthal , Canton Aargau , directly opposite the Baden district town of Waldshut .
History of the museum
The origins of the museum go back to the "Association for the Promotion of a Defense Technology Museum", which was founded by Thomas Hug with friends. In 1989 the Reuenthal Fortress Museum was opened. In 1998 the construction of the military museum in Full began on a former industrial site. The Full-Reuenthal Military and Fortress Museum (VMFM) is responsible for the Swiss Military Museum Full, which opened in 2004 . The association had its official domicile until 2011 in the former Reuenthal Fortress, which it has also operated as a museum since 1989 . A new museum hall was opened in April 2010.
Exhibits
In several former factory halls, the museum mainly shows tanks, artillery, anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns from the Swiss army and other armies from the 20th century .
A special feature is the complete collection of works by the former weapons manufacturer Oerlikon-Bührle , which mainly includes anti-aircraft and aircraft weapons. The museum also has a German type V1 flying bomb , a Reichenberg device, as well as engines and defenses from English and American bombers that have crashed or landed in Switzerland.
In addition to these two museums, the association owns around 100 former military installations in the region (e.g. anti-tank barriers, gun bunkers, infantry works, command posts), all of which have been restored and are preserved for posterity as witnesses of the Cold War .
In April 2010 an additional museum hall and the new Mowag exhibition were inaugurated. Armored vehicles from different countries can be seen in the 3000 m² hall. Presented here are the tanks from Swiss production from the tank 61 up to the Panzer 68 /88. The Mowag exhibition shows armored vehicles from the Mowag factory collection, which mainly consists of prototypes.
