The Koblenz blocking point was a border fortification of Border Brigade 5 of the Swiss Army . It extends on the left bank of the Rhine from Laubberg via Koblenz AG and the mouth of the Aare to the Klingnau power station .

Their works secured the main access axis Aare valley between the mouth of the Aare and Rietheim , the banks of the Aare and the Rhine crossings as well as the traffic axes south of the Rhine. It is considered a military historical monument of national importance.

history

The strategic importance of the Rhine was already recognized by the Romans. Valentinian I completed in 370 years, the attachment of the Rhine line , followed by the ruins of the built in 371 Roman watchtower on small running remember at Koblenz.

The engineer officer course of 1934 provided for the fortification of the Koblenz Rhine crossings. Around 1935, the existing explosive devices were added to all Rhine bridges and the anti-tank barriers were erected.

In 1935/36 two machine gun works (Mg bunker Aarebrücke-West A 4241 and -Ost A 4242) were installed in the abutments of the new road bridge at the mouth of the Aare near Felsenau-Koblenz. They were the first heavy armaments of the Swiss fortifications since the Swiss Army stopped building fortifications at the end of the First World War and the office for fortifications was re-established. This marked the beginning of intensive fortification construction at the crossings on and behind the Rhine.

In 1937 an infantry work (A 4232) with local defense posts was built to protect the railway bridge at the north portal above the railway tunnel. It forms a base-like arrangement with an infantry factory with a rifle gallery as the main plant as well as light machine gun stands (Lmg) and crew quarters. Machine gun bunkers (MG) were built along the banks of the Rhine to prevent enemy infantry forces from crossing over. In Rietheim's Rheinboden, the bunkers at the foot of the Laubberg hill range were taken back and a rail obstacle was added.
