The Gulf Times is one of the three English-language daily newspapers in Qatar , along with the Qatar Tribune and The Peninsula . The newspaper was founded on June 1, 1978 by the Gulf Publishing & Printing Company in Doha . Two months later, the Ministry of Information approved the application for a newspaper and redeemed the license. The editorial team started with twelve employees. The first edition of the newspaper was published on December 10, 1978 and was still a weekly newspaper at the time . The newspaper has been published daily since February 21, 1981. During the 1980s, the company had around 300 employees.

In 1995 the Gulf Times was converted from a tabloid to a broadsheet format and the scope of the content was increased significantly.
