Primorsko-Akhtarsk ( Russian Приморско-Ахтарск ) is a city in the Krasnodar region ( Russia ) with 32,257 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 150 km northwest of the regional capital Krasnodar on the coast of the Azov Sea . The Akhtarski Liman and other, now partially drained, lagoons extend south of the city . These and the Beissugski Liman a good ten kilometers north of the city are the largest bays of this type on the east coast of the Sea of Azov.
Primorsko-Akhtarsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
The city is the end point of a railway line opened in 1914 ( Akhtari station ) from Krasnodar via Timashovsk .
history
During the Russo-Turkish war from 1768 to 1774 which located here Ottoman fortress was built by the Russian troops Achtar-Bachtar (Russian name, mutilated by Turkish about white rock on the sea ) taken, which after the temporary loss of Azov a 1696 instead older settlement had been established. In 1778 the Akhtari Redoute ( Akhtarski redut) was built by the Russian army .
After the fortifications lost their military importance, the Cossack village (Khutor) Akhtarsky was established in 1829 . In 1900 the village received the status of a stanitsa with the name Primorsko-Akhtarskaja ( primorski Russian for by the sea ).
In 1949 city charter was granted under its current name.

economy
Primorsko-Akhtarsk is the center of an agricultural area and is characterized by the food industry. In addition, fishing and processing, a perfume factory and building materials industry.
The city is a seaside resort with an eight-kilometer-long sand and pebble beach.
