Bernd Feustel
Bernd Feustel (born September 20, 1954 in Bamberg ; † September 22, 2012 there ) was a German chess master .
Life
Bernd Feustel learned to play chess at an early age and became a member of SC 1868 Bamberg in 1964 . At the age of ten years he succeeded in a simultaneous game a draw against the then world chess champion Tigran Petrosian . In 1972 and 1973 he won the international German youth championship. In 1976 and 1977 he was German team champion with SC 1868 Bamberg . Feustel also took part in the 1978/79 European Club Cup with SC 1868 Bamberg . In 1974 he was invited to the London tournament, in 1980 he finished second behind Eric Lobron in Bad Neuenahrat the German individual championship . In the same year he won the German Blitz Championship .
Feustel moved to Erlangen, where he began studying Slavic, English and Indo-European studies . He played for TB Erlangen on the top board in the German chess league until 1983 , switched to FC Bayern Munich for the 1983/84 season and played again for Erlangen in the 1st Bundesliga from 1984 to 1986. Due to health problems, he retired from tournament chess at the end of 1996. In previous years he had run a typesetting studio specializing in chess . He was also involved in numerous book projects and translations, most of which had to do with the subject of chess.
After a long break, Feustel received a free place in the German individual championship in 2007 as a player for the organizing club, SC 1957 Bad Königshofen. After a good start with 3.5 points from 6 rounds, he had to stop the tournament prematurely due to an illness.
Feustel liked to avoid fully analyzed openings and preferred lesser-known routes. To this end, he wrote what is probably his best-known book Openings - apart from all theory . A hedgehog-like opening structure is named after him ( Feustel structure or hippopotamus opening ), which is characterized by the line-up of the follower with b6, d6, e6, g6, Bb7, Bg7, Ne7 and Nd7.
Bernd Feustel carried the title of FIDE Master , his last Elo rating in July 2011 was 2284, his highest was 2375 in July 1981.
