William Rea

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William "Bill" Rea (born February 3, 1952 in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer ) is a former Austrian - American long jumper .

In 1972, as fourth in the US trials, he narrowly missed participation in the Olympic Games in Munich .

As the son of an Austrian mother, he used his dual nationality in the run-up to the 1980 Olympic Games and switched to the Austrian federation in order to be able to qualify more easily. Because of the United States' Olympic boycott, he was one of the few US citizens to take part in the Games. Rea was Austrian champion in the summer of 1980 and set three Austrian records (most recently on September 13 in Rovereto with 8.00 m), but retired in Moscow in qualifying.

He achieved his personal best of 8.11 m on May 13, 1972 in Pittsburgh .
