Hermann Schmitz (ancient historian)

Hermann Schmitz (born March 25, 1891 in Mönchengladbach ; † before 1976 ) was a German ancient historian and high school teacher.

life and work

Hermann Schmitz attended high school in Mönchengladbach. From the summer semester of 1910 he studied history and classical philology at the Universities of Freiburg , Munich and Strasbourg , and from the summer semester of 1912 at the University of Bonn . Here he was in December 1914. Ulrich Wilcken with the work the Hellenistic-Roman city facilities in Egypt doctorate , only the part about the 1921 Hermopolis was printed. In December 1916, he passed the teaching examination for history, Greek and Latin. He completed his seminar year at the grammar school in Essen .

Due to the inflation in the early 1920s, he had to quit his job and worked as a bank clerk. At that time he was living in Freiburg im Breisgau . For a printing grant for his previously published treatise A Law of the City of Olbia to Protect Their Silver Money. Study of the Greek currency history of the 4th century BC Chr. By the Emergency Association of German Science he turned 1925 Ulrich Wilcken. This passed this on to Eduard Meyer for application.

Then he worked again as a high school teacher in the Rhineland. He was a teacher active in Koblenz , Brühl (1926) Prüm (1931-32) and from 1932 on Dreikönigsgymnasium in Cologne . In Cologne in the thirties he also worked part-time as a museum teacher at the Roman-Germanic department of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum . He systematically conducted classes in the museum for school classes and trained trainee teachers and teachers.

Scientifically, he dealt with the history of the city of Cologne in Roman times , the Roman Rhineland and the topography of the Roman Empire . He wrote numerous articles for the Realencyclopedia of Classical Antiquity . In addition, he had been a member of the Society for Rhenish History from 1950 . In 1955/56 he was awarded the title of professor. In retirement he lived in Grenzach (Baden) .
