Bernhard Laum

Bernhard Laum (born April 12, 1884 in Velen , † October 22, 1974 in Marburg ) was a German economic historian .

Laum first studied archeology and classical philology and worked for the German Archaeological Institute after completing his doctorate . After completing his habilitation, he first taught classical studies, and since 1920 economics in Frankfurt am Main . In 1923 he moved to the Lyceum Hosianum in Braunsberg as a professor of philology and archeology . From 1936 until his retirement in 1953 he was professor for social and economic history at the University of Marburg .

Laum's collection of sources on ancient foundations is considered a standard work. The theory developed in his post-doctoral thesis, Holy Money , that money developed from a religious origin - a kind of "religious trade" - received great attention .
