He celebrated his greatest success in 1952 when he took part in the Olympic Games in Helsinki with 65 other athletes, including Gustav Östling and Henry Norrström from Sweden .

After about half the distance, Emil Zátopek and Gustaf Jansson overtook the British Jim Peters (who later gave up the race). In the final phase Jansson could not follow the Czech, who won the gold medal in 2:23:04 h, and also had to let the Argentinean Reinaldo Gorno (silver in 2:25:35 h) go. However, he managed to save third place at the finish - with 2:26:07 h he was just under half a minute ahead of the South Korean Choi Yun-chil and won bronze.

Two years later, at the 1954 European Championships in Bern , he was able to almost repeat his time in Helsinki with 2:26:46 h. It brought him to 5th place (the Finn Veikko Karvonen won in 2:24:52 h).
