Daniel "Danny" Lee Harris (born September 7, 1965 in Torrance ) is a former American 400 m hurdler .

Athletic career

Harris took part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , where he won the silver medal in 48.13 seconds behind Edwin Moses . His pre-established time of 48.02 seconds is still the current junior world record (as of March 18, 2009).

Harris was the runner who ended Edwin Moses' eleven-year and 122-race winning streak over 400 m hurdles in Madrid in 1987 . At the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 he finished in a memorable final 2/100 seconds behind Moses, at the same time as third-placed German Harald Schmid , in 47.48 seconds.

1988 Harris missed participating in the Olympic Games in Seoul , since he did not come at the US championships in the top three. Harris set his best time in Lausanne in 1991 with 47.38 seconds. With his best performance, he ranks 12th on the all-time world best list. In the same year he finished fifth at the World Championships in Tokyo .

A doping test in 1992 determined that he was ingesting cocaine , which is why he went into therapy. He was given a four-year ban that was later reduced to two years.

After a prison sentence and homelessness, Midnight Mission in Los Angeles helped him to get rid of drug use. He has worked for this organization himself since he got clean in 2006.

At a height of 1.83 meters, his competition weight was 77 kg.
