Monique Éwanjé-Épée

Monique Éwanjé-Épée (after marriage to Tourret, second marriage to Lewin ; born July 11, 1967 in Poitiers ) is a former French hurdler whose special route was the 100-meter distance .

Career

At the Junior European Championships in 1985 she won the 100 meters hurdles and was in the heptathlon sixth. From then on she concentrated on the hurdles sprint. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , she was seventh in 13.14 s. At the European Indoor Championships in 1989 in The Hague , she finished fifth in 8.22 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. A year later she won silver at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 7.84 s behind the Russian Ludmila Naroschilenko in 7.72 s. In the summer at the European Championships in Split , she won in 12.79 s before Gloria Siebert from the GDR in 12.91 s.

At the World Indoor Championships in Seville in 1991 , she won silver again in 7.90 s. This time she was only two hundredths of a second behind Naroshilenko. At the World Championships in Tokyo , she finished fourth in 12.84 s, 15 hundredths of a second behind bronze. The following year she won in Genoa at the European Indoor Championships in Genoa in 7.99 s again silver behind Naroschilenko. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona , she was eliminated in advance.

After the birth of her first daughter, she reached the final again at the 1995 World Indoor Championships in Barcelona and finished fourth in 7.98 s. She won her last medal at a major event in 1996 at the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm . She finished third in 8.09 s. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta , she reached the quarter-finals.

Monique Éwanjé-Épée is 1.74 m and weighed 65 kg during her playing days.

Personal

She was born the daughter of a Cameroonian and a Frenchwoman. Her older sister Maryse Éwanjé-Épée was a successful high jumper . In 1991 Monique Éwanjé-Épée married the pole vaulter Christophe Tourret. Their daughter Marylou was born in 1993 and their second daughter Olivia was born in 1997. Today she is married to the gospel singer Frederick Lewin, their son Joachim was born in 2006.
