The An Muirthead Peninsula ( anglicized : Mullet Peninsula ) is located in the Barony of Erris, in the far northwest of County Mayo in Ireland . It is 33 km long and apart from the constriction (up to 400 m) at Elly Bay, 12 km wide. The peninsula of mullets ( English mullet ) is Gaeltacht -type region with a rich heritage of traditional music .
The highest point in the south is the 105 m high Cnoc an Tearmainn , near which in the village of An Fál Mór is the St. Deirbhile's Church (national monument) with its Romanesque portal and the holy spring . In the north, the 138 m high Tower Hill is the end point of the peninsula. The peninsula is accessed via the 1.7 km wide isthmus of Béal an Mhuirthead , the only larger town in the region (1200 inhabitants). The coast on the Atlantic side is almost uninhabited and poor in vegetation. In the southeast at An Fód Dubh you have a view of the cliffs of Acaill .
The peninsula is popular with anglers and ornithologists ( snowy owls on the Cnoc on Tearmainn). The offshore islands Inis Gé are a well-known bird sanctuary. Inishglora ( Irish Inis Gluaire ) is an uninhabited island off the coast. There are several church ruins there.
