history

The place was founded in 1715 by Sir Arthur Shaen. To drain the marshland, he had a canal built, which allowed small boats to operate between Blacksod Bay and Broadhaven Bay.

At the beginning of the 19th century, William Henry Carter took over a large part of the land. Under his administration, the road to Castlebar was laid out and a pier for ships up to 100 GRT was built. As a result, the city developed positively, so that a Catholic church was built in 1832 and a Protestant church in 1857. In 1847 a fish processing company started production.

economy

In 1996 a natural gas deposit was discovered off the coast. The construction of a refinery and pipelines is planned for the economic use of the deposit.
