Kaavi [ ˈkɑːvi ] is a municipality with 2990 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in eastern Finland . It is located around 60 kilometers northeast of the city of Kuopio in the Savo countryside .

Municipal council
The strongest political force in Kaavi is the peasant-liberal Center Party . In the 2017 local elections, she received more than a third of the votes despite losses. In the local council, the highest decision-making body in local affairs, it has six of 17 members of parliament. The country's two other major parties, the Social Democrats and the National Assembly Party , each with two seats on the local council, play a smaller role than in other regions of Finland. The right-wing populist True Finns with three and the Green Bund and Christian Democrats each with one seat are also represented in the local council . Kaavi is Sami and means “small harbor for boats”.
economy
In Luikolahti copper was mined from 1968 to 1983, after the mine was closed the site was the location of a talc plant of the company Mondo Minerals Oy, a subsidiary of the Swiss Omya group, which was also closed in 2006. The main branch of the economy is still the metalworking industry.
In the 1990s, diamonds were found in the bedrock in Kaavi.
tourism
Kaavi is 45 km from Kuopio Airport and 85 km from Joensuu Airport.
Tourism is becoming increasingly important; In summer the Vaikkojoki river attracts canoeists and anglers, in winter the main attraction is the Maarianrinteet ski resort.
There are marked shipping routes for boaters from Lake Saimaa to the guest boat ports in Luikonlahti and Kaavi.
