Juankoski [ ˈjuɑŋˌkoski ] ( Swedish historically Strömsdal ) is a formerly independent town in the Finnish landscape of Northern Savo . It has belonged to the city of Kuopio since 2017 . Juankoski is about 40 km from Kuopio and 90 km from Joensuu .

The community last had 4795 inhabitants (as of March 31, 2016) and covered 586.35 square kilometers, of which 120.99 square kilometers were water. Finnish is spoken almost throughout .

Together with the city of Nilsiä , Juankoski is located in the 280 hectare Pisa Nature Reserve , where the old boundary stones from 1595 between Sweden and Russia can be seen.

The industrial mining of iron ore began in the 18th century, today the remaining blast furnaces and the “Masuuni Brunou” museum remind of this. The most important economic factor is the wood processing and paper industry. Tourism is also not insignificant, in summer they advertise recreation in the lake landscape, in winter with skiing activities.

City council

The strongest political force in Juankoski on the last city council was the Center Party . In the 2012 local elections she received more than 40% of the vote. In the city council, the highest decision-making body in local affairs, it provided 12 of 27 MPs, but lost an absolute majority of the seats. The country's two other major parties, the Social Democrats and the National Gathering Party, play a smaller role than in other regions of Finland, with five and one seat respectively on the city council. Also represented on the city council were the right-wing populist True Finns with five, as well as the Left Alliance and the Christian Democrats with two members each.
