The Keurusselkä is a lake in the Finnish landscapes of Central Finland and Pirkanmaa .
The lake is located between the two cities of Keuruu in the north and Mänttä in the south. Together with the Ukonselkä , which connects to the west, it forms a lake system. The common water area amounts to 118.2 km². The average water depth is 4.88 m. The maximum depth is 40.99 m. The water level is at a height of 105.5 m.
The Keurusselkä flows to Lake Kuorevesi to the south and further west to Ruovesi and Näsijärvi and is thus in the catchment area of Kokemäenjoki .
Due to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, the region around the Keurusselkä was heavily radioactive. Nevertheless, the fish caught in the lake are considered to be harmless to health.
Impact crater
The Keurusselkä covers the remains of an impact crater that was discovered by amateur geologists in 2003.
Cones of rays and corresponding rock formations, such as those typically formed by meteorite impacts, were found within a radius of almost 6 km. This area is possibly just the central mountain ( ⊙ ) and the original crater diameter would then be around 30 km. The age of the crater is estimated to be 1,144 ± 10 million years.
Only 30 km east of the center of the Keurusselkä impact structure is the Karikkoselkä , a much smaller and younger impact structure.
The Ukonselkä , an approximately circular lake immediately west of the Keurusselkä, is also listed as an impact structure.
