The Näsijärvi [ ˈnæsijærvi ] is an inland lake in western Finland . It is part of the north to south running chain of lakes Vaskivesi-Visuvesi - Tarjanne - Ruovesi - Palovesi -Näsijärvi, which ends in the north at Virrat . With an area of 256.8 km² it is one of the largest lakes in this region and flows into Lake Pyhäjärvi in Tampere via the Tammerkoski rapids .
Since the timber industry has reduced its waste water , especially the phosphorus content , in recent years, the water quality has been improved.
The asteroid (1534) Näsi is named after the lake .
