Mikko Kuningas (born July 30, 1997 in Luumäki ) is a Finnish football player who has been under contract with the first division club FC Lahti since February 2020 . The midfielder is also a former Finnish junior international.

Club career

FC Lahti

Kuningas switched to the youth work of PEPO Lappeenranta in 2010 , having previously played in the youth of the local club Luumuchten Pojissa . In 2014, at the age of 16, he was promoted to the first team, which played in the third-rate Kakkonen . After making a good impression at PEPO in the 2014 season and being the team's top scorer with seven goals in 21 games, the first division club FC Lahti signed the midfielder in January 2015. Before that, there was also a transfer to Myllykosken Pallo -47 , which could not be realized due to financial difficulties of the association. Kuningas started the season in the reserve team in the third class Kakkonen. There he met twice in the first nine games and was then pulled up to the first team. On July 19 (19th matchday) he made his debut in the Veikkausliiga in a 3-1 home win against the Tampereen Ilves and also netted in this game. In the 2015 season he made ten appearances in the first team, in which he scored one goal and prepared two. Due to his rapid ascent, Kuningas was seen as a promising talent in his homeland and aroused hopes of being able to follow in the footsteps of the great Jari Litmanen .

In the next season of 2016 , he advanced to the starting line-up and won the Liigacup with FC Lahti . In the summer of 2016, the Brazilian club Fluminense Rio de Janeiro , a cooperation club of FC Lahti, became aware of Kuningas. In Brazil, he impressed those responsible during a trial training session and the transfer was already reported by Lahtis on their website as fixed, but ultimately failed because the midfielder would not have been granted a game permit until January 2017. Flu then lost interest in Kuningas, which ultimately remained in Finland. In 25 league games he scored two goals and prepared two more goals. In the next season of 2017, he retained the status of the regular player and was used in 27 league games in which he again scored twice. The long-awaited breakthrough to the top player in the qualitatively weak Veikkausliiga was not achieved by Kuningas this season either. In the Finnish media, his inconsistency was particularly criticized. After three seasons at FC Lahti, he left the club at the end of 2017 after his contract expired on a free transfer.

Kuningas returned to FC Lahti on February 27, 2020.

Inter Turku

For the 2018 season he joined league rivals Inter Turku . He made his competitive debut on January 19 in a 3-0 home win in the Suomen Cup against second division club Ekenäs IF and made his first goal in this. On May 12, he scored the winning goal in the final of this competition against HJK Helsinki in the 83rd minute, 12 minutes after being substituted on, and gave his new club their first title in nine years. In the league, he met two weeks later in a 3-3 draw against Rovaniemi PS after a free kick for the first time. In 28 league games he collected two goals and six assists this season. After ending the following season 2019 without scoring in 24 missions, he left the club on December 31, 2019 after his contract expired.

National team

In June 2015 he took part in the U-18 Baltic Cup with the Finnish U-18 national team. Later he also played for the U19 and U21 .
