The Roman Catholic branch church Schönau is located in the Schönau district of the Bad Schallerbach community in the Grieskirchen district in Upper Austria . It is consecrated to St. Peter and belongs to the parish Bad Schallerbach in the deanery Wels-Land in the diocese of Linz . The building is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The church in Schönau goes back to a Romanesque building from the 10th or 11th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1142 in a letter from Pope Innocent II. It belonged to the Mondsee Monastery for over 600 years until it was exchanged for the Passau Monastery in 1706 . Under Emperor Joseph II, Schönau became a secular parish of the newly founded Diocese of Linz in 1785.

The first structural expansion took place in 1687. The church was given its current appearance at the end of the 19th century when side extensions were added and the tower was raised.

Until 1959 the Schönau church was the parish church. It was replaced in this function by the newly built parish church Bad Schallerbach and since then it has been their branch church.

architecture

The church is single-nave with a four-bay nave. The one-yoke choir has a straight end.

Furnishing

In 1965/1966 the interior was completely redesigned and equipped by Max Spielmann . The altarpiece is partially executed as a mosaic and shows Jesus as risen as well as scenes from the life of the church patron, St. Peter.
