Heimo Verneri Haitto (born May 22, 1925 in Vyborg , Finland , † September 9, 1999 in Marbella , Province of Málaga , Spain ) was a Finnish musician .

Life

Heimo was the second of four children. His father Kalle taught him to play the violin at an early age . In Vyborg , Boris Sirpo taught the growing talent. As a teenager he was separated from his family and sent to the United States to give concerts. The winter war between Finland and the Soviet Union that began in 1939 also influenced the parents' decision. He later learned from Ivan Galamian in New York (1943–1945).

On his 18th birthday, Haitto tried in vain to join the US Army . After the war he returned to Los Angeles and became a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra . He married the American cellist Beverly Le Beck, with whom he had a son and a daughter. Haitto separated from her soon afterwards, he became addicted to gambling and alcohol and came back to Finland for a short time in the 1960s, where he married the actress Marja-Liisa Nisula in 1964 , from whom he separated again in 1966. In 1976 he returned to Finland, where he now lived with his partner Eva Vastari. He worked for the Lahti Conservatory.

His last years were spent Haitto finally in Spanish Marbelle. He died there in 1999 after a long illness. Two years earlier, his son had died as a result of drug abuse .
