Location of Eno in Finland

Eno [ ˈɛnɔ ] is a former municipality in eastern Finland with almost 6800 inhabitants. At the beginning of 2009 she was incorporated into the city of Joensuu together with Pyhäselkä .

Eno is located in the North Karelia landscape around 30 km northeast of Joensuu south of the Pielinen Lake at its Pielisjoki outflow . The municipality has two local centers: the church village Eno with about 2000 inhabitants and the industrial center Uimaharju with about 1600 inhabitants. The municipality also includes the villages of Ahveninen, Karhunsalo, Kuisma-Majoinvaara, Louhioja, Luhtapohja-Palovaara, Paukkaja, Revonkylä, Sarvinki-Pirttivaara, Siikavaara-Savivaara-Pahkavaara and Ukkola.

Eno is the most important industrial location in the region. The wood processing industry in particular plays a major role: the largest employer in the municipality is the Stora Enso Group with a cellulose factory and a sawmill . Traditionally, the Pielisjoki River has provided employment to the people of Eno through rafting and fishing.

The word eno means "maternal uncle" in Finnish today . The name of the community is derived from an older word with the same name meaning “stream” or “large river” and refers to the Pielisjoki.

Eno is the birthplace of the Finnish biathlete and cross-country skier Mari Eder .
