In July 2018 she married the former Austrian biathlete Benjamin Eder .

Career

biathlon

Beginnings

In 2005 Mari Eder took part in a junior world championship for the first time in her Finnish homeland, in Kontiolahti . She achieved her best result in fourth place with the relay, in the individual, the sprint and the pursuit, she came in positions between 20 and 22. A year later in Presque Isle , she was fourth in the pursuit after 13th in the sprint, her best individual result a Junior World Championship. At the junior European championship of the same year in Langdorf , she won the gold medal in this form of competition and was also fifth in the individual and eighth in the sprint. In 2007 at the Junior World Championships in Martell , she achieved results in the individual races between eleventh and 13th place, with the relay she was fifth. Then Eder was allowed to compete in a biathlon world championship for the first time . In Antholz , the Finn was able to qualify for the pursuit race in 43rd place, but in this competition she was not counted as a lapped athlete. Eder was also 12th in the women's relay and 16 in the mixed relay.

Regular appearances in the World Cup (2007 to 2013)

Eder during the 2008 World Cup

In the summer, Eder competed in the roller-skis competitions of the World Championships in summer biathlon and, in both the sprint and the pursuit, twice just barely missed precious metal in fourth place. The Finn has been part of her country's squad for the Biathlon World Cup since the 2007/08 season . She made her debut in Kontiolahti and was 79th in the sprint race. The last time she took part in a Junior World Championship in Ruhpolding . The fourth time the athlete was fifth in the pursuit and narrowly missed a medal. Eder celebrated her international breakthrough at the 2008 Biathlon World Championships in Östersund . As 34th in the sprint and 33rd in the pursuit, she narrowly missed winning her first World Cup points. In the singles she reached 47th place, with the mixed relay she was tenth and with the women's relay 15th. The first time she won World Cup points at the World Cup finals at Holmenkollen in Oslo , where she reached 26th place in the sprint. Mari Eder took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her best result was the 43rd place in the individual. Eder had her breakthrough in the World Cup in the 2011/12 season . She placed in the top 20 three times, at Holmenkollen in Oslo she reached 14th place in a pursuit race after 20th place in the sprint. In the 2012/2013 Biathlon World Cup , she achieved her first top 10 result in the World Cup in the sprint in Ruhpolding on January 11, 2013.

First podium placement in the World Cup (2013 to 2015)

In the 2013/2014 season , Mari Eder was very strong from the start. In several races she reached times among the top ten on the trail, but due to weaknesses at the shooting range, her results were often outside the points. After a 9th place in the sprint in Pokljuka , Laukkanen surprised in Kontiolahti with a 3rd place in the sprint. With the eighth best running time and no shooting errors, she achieved her first podium finish in the World Cup behind her teammate Kaisa Mäkäräinen and the also faultless Russian Olga Saizewa .

In the following season , however, she could no longer build on these successes. Only in the sprint races in Oberhof and Ruhpolding did she reach fifth place and thus the only top 10 places this winter. At the home World Championships in Kontiolahti, a 16th place in the sprint was her best individual result of the event, she could not place for the mass start. She finished the season in 36th place overall.

Illness and first victories in the World Cup (2015 to 2017)

She was preparing for the 2015/16 season with the Austrian women's team in Hochfilzen . She also tried to improve her shooting performance at the University and State Sports Center Salzburg Rif . During the winter she had to struggle with health problems again and again. She did not finish two races and had to cancel the start of two more at short notice. She failed to qualify for a pursuit race several times and never reached the top 10 in any race. At the 2016 Biathlon World Championships in Oslo , Norway , she completed the mixed relay, the sprint and the pursuit race. Due to illness, she decided not to start in the other races and left Oslo early. In order to get to the bottom of the causes of her physical problems and to regain full health, she ended the season prematurely at this point. As with many other biathletes, Eder was diagnosed with glandular fever .

Mari Eder decided against ending her career early. In preparation for the 2016/17 season , she again trained a lot with the Austrian team and continued to work on her skills at the shooting range. She took part in the Summer Biathlon World Championships in Otepää , Estonia , and won the mixed relay together with Kaisa Mäkäräinen , Tuomas Grönman and Olli Hiidensalo .

Especially in terms of running she was able to take a big step forward, with one exception her running time was always within the ten best of a race, in the last race of the season, the mass start in Oslo , she also set the fastest time. She skipped the competition in Ruhpolding in order to qualify for participation in the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti, Finland . At the 2017 Biathlon World Championships in Hochfilzen , she missed the bronze medal in an individual competition, it was her first top 10 result in this discipline. During the World Cup in Pyeongchang , she was in Lahti, in the cross-country sprint she could barely qualify for the final. In eighth place, however, she was by far the best Finnish athlete in this competition. Back in the World Cup, she shot error-free again in the sprint in Oslo for the first time since her podium success in 2014 in Kontiolahti and won her first World Cup race. She went into the pursuit as the leader and won this race with just one shooting error. It was only the second time that Eder missed only one target in a race with four bouts. The first time was in February 2012 , also in a pursuit race in Oslo. She dedicated her second victory to her shooting coach and close confidante Asko Nuutinen. He had suffered a heart attack a week earlier during the World Cup in Kontiolahti, from the consequences of which he had died the night before. The Finnish team therefore wore a black ribbon that day .

Third Olympic participation and renewed break from illness (since 2017)

In the 2017/18 season , Mari Eder was unable to build on the successes of last winter with two World Cup victories at the season finale in Oslo . The best place of the winter was a twelfth place in the sprint in Annecy / Le Grand-Bornand . She took part in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , but missed the qualification for the pursuit race and only achieved 42nd place in the individual competition over 15 km. Nevertheless, she was nominated for the team sprint in cross-country skiing , together with Krista Pärmäkoski she just missed the medal ranks in fifth.

In summer 2018 she married Benjamin Eder and started as Mari Eder . After participating in the World Cup races in Slovenia and Austria at the beginning of the 2018/19 season , Eder had to take another break from competition for health reasons. Towards the end of the winter she still contested a race in the second-class IBU Cup in Otepää , but only achieved a 38th place there despite the significantly poorer performance level compared to the World Cup.

At the beginning of winter 2019/20 Eder stated that he was healthy again and started again in the World Cup.

Cross-country skiing

In addition to biathlon, Eder also runs cross-country skiing and has been participating in competitions, mostly lower-class racing series such as the Scandinavian Cup , since 2005 . In 2007 she took part in her first Junior World Championship in Tarvisio and finished eleventh over the 5-kilometer freestyle. A year later she made her debut in the cross-country skiing world cup in a freestyle sprint in Lahti and finished in 23rd place. At the Finnish championships in Jämijärvi in 2009 , she won the bronze medal in the freestyle sprint and was fifth in the 15-kilometer classic. On January 26, 2010 she won the gold medal at the Nordic Junior World Championships in sprinting. During the Biathlon World Cup season 2013/2014 , she competed in several sprint races in the Cross-Country World Cup , her best result was a 14th place in Lahti, Finland. At the 2014 Winter Olympics , she also started in the sprint and reached 15th place. In summer 2015 and 2016 she took part in “skate the ring” at the Salzburgring and won the roller ski competition over 30 km on both occasions . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti, Eder once again strengthened the Finnish women's team and barely failed to qualify for the final in the women's sprint semi- finals. In the end, she finished 8th and was the best Finn in the competition. In 2018 she was nominated for the team sprint in the freestyle at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang , together with Krista Pärmäkoski , as fifth, she missed the medal ranks by only about 20 seconds. The gap to the winning team from the United States was just under 23 seconds.

In her first years in the Biathlon World Cup , Mari Eder was one of the worse cross-country skiers in the field. Similar to her teammate Kaisa Mäkäräinen , she developed her current running strength over time.

She achieved her first running times within the top ten athletes of a race in the sprint and the pursuit race in the 2010/11 season at Holmenkollen in Oslo . In the following winter she achieved two top 10 times again, in the remaining races her performance in this sub-discipline was almost exclusively outside the top 20.

From the 2013/14 season she was able to increase her mileage significantly. Six top 10 times and, with two exceptions, all results within the 30 fastest races in a race are evidence of this development. In the World Cup 2014/15 she achieved her best performance so far in the pursuit race in Hochfilzen with the third running time. Seven more top 10 times are recorded this winter and with one exception she finished all races within the 20 fastest runners.

However, the winter of 2015/16 brought a setback in this development. From the start, Eder was unable to match the previous year's performance. Due to physical problems, she finished two races early and did not start two more. After the pursuit race at the 2016 World Cup in Oslo, she ended both the title fights and her season prematurely to get to the bottom of her physical problems. She was diagnosed with glandular fever a short time later .

Mari Eder was able to recover from this illness faster than average and achieved the fourth-best run time in the first race of the new season . With one exception, she finished all races of the winter among the top ten runners and thus had a similarly good rate as Kaisa Mäkäräinen. In the last race of the season, the mass start at Holmenkollen in Oslo, she set the fastest time for the first time in her career. This winter she also competed at her home world championships in Lahti . In the sprint, she narrowly missed qualifying for the final, in the end she was the best Finn in this competition with an eighth place. It was not set up for the relay.

In her first season in the World Cup, Mari Eder only took part in the 2007 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz . She ran the sprint race and was lapped in the pursuit race that followed. She also competed in both relay races in the title fights. With only three rated races, the statistics for this year have little meaning. At almost 76%, however, their overall hit rate was roughly in the range where they could be found in later years. A similar picture emerges in the years 2007/08 and 2008/09 . Eder competed in less than half of all races during this time and her hit performance fluctuated greatly. In 2007/08 this was 82% and in 2008/09 it was less than 63%, which on average, at 72%, again reflected the efficiency of the time.

From the 2009/10 Biathlon World Cup onwards , Eder regularly took part in World Cup races, from which time it is easier to compare their hit rates. This winter, her hit rate was almost 72%, her worst result was the sprint in Oberhof , where she missed half of all targets and finished in 53rd place. Over the next two years their rate ranged from 70% to 73%.

In the winter of 2012/13 , she shot the sprint in Ruhpolding for the first time in her career in a World Cup race without a mistake, in the end she finished 10th and thus achieved the first top 10 result in the World Cup. Other races were not so successful, in the pursuit race on Holmenkollen she had to run nine penalties.

Mari Eder achieved her first podium finish at the Home World Cup in Kontiolahti in the 2013/14 season when she finished third behind her team-mate Kaisa Mäkäräinen and Olga Saizewa after shooting cleanly . In two other sprint races, she only missed one target, but this season her overall hit rate fell below 70% for the first time. This was due to several races with four shooting bouts in which she made many mistakes. In the opening race of winter, the individual competition in Östersund , Sweden , she missed more than half of the targets. A similar picture emerges in 2014/15 , when she continued to have good shooting results in sprint races, but failed to hit seven, eight or even ten targets in competitions with four shooting bouts.

Eder's hit performance only improved in winter 2015/16 . In preparation for this season, she had her shooting analyzed using laser technology at the University and State Sports Center Salzburg / Rif and continued to work on improving her hit rate. Despite many shooting errors, their quota, especially when standing up, shows that these measures were successful. Although she had to end the season prematurely because of an illness with Pfeiffer glandular fever , at the end of the day she achieved an average hit rate of almost 77%. Eder was able to overcome her illness quickly and after normal preparation he was able to take part in the first competitions of 2016/17 . In the individual race in Östersund, however, she hit only half of the targets again. In the individual race in Antholz there were only three mistakes left, so she secured World Cup points in this discipline for the first time in her career. At the 2017 Biathlon World Championships , she narrowly missed the podium with just one error in the individual as fourth. It was her best result in the discipline, and the first time in her career, that she made just one mistake in a four-bounty run. At the last World Cup of the season at Holmenkollen in Oslo , Eder surprised with a sprint victory after shooting without a mistake. She was the first to go into the pursuit, again just missed one disc and won that race. She dedicated this victory to Asko Nuutinen, who was the shooting coach of the Finnish team and a close confidante for a long time. Nuutinen suffered a heart attack at the World Cup in Kontiolahti the week before and died of the consequences the night before. With these two victories, Eder qualified for the last race of the season. In the mass start she made two mistakes while lying down, but finished sixth with the best time.
