Pyhäjärvi ( Russian Пюхяярви , German "Holy Lake") is a 248 km² lake on the Russian - Finnish border.
207 km² of the lake area is in Finland - in the landscapes of North and South Karelia in Finland. Only the southeastern part (41 km²) of the lake is in the Republic of Karelia in Russia. The lake is within the parish boundaries of Kitee and Parikkala in Finland.
The lake is drained at Puhos via the Puhoksenkoski to the Orivesi and is therefore in the catchment area of the Saimaa lake system. Pohjois-Karjalan Sähkön has been operating a hydroelectric power plant near Puhos since 1961 with an installed capacity of 0.8 MW , which uses the height difference between the two bodies of water of 3.7 m.
