Vice President

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The vice-president is the representative of a president, both in politics and in business. It can have representative tasks and in the event of the death or resignation of the president without an election, it rises temporarily or completely in his place.

The vice-president can be included in the election of the president in order to make the presidential candidate eligible for voters who do not belong to his actual clientele.

In the economy - in the American system - vice presidents are usually responsible for a specific department . This term is also becoming more and more widespread in German-speaking countries. In large organizations there are superordinate levels preceded by the words 'Senior' and 'Executive'.

Also, associations , chambers , courts and authorities have vice presidents, if top management person has the President title. See District President .

Politically

Germany

In Germany the President of the Bundesrat is the deputy of the Federal President . He takes over the office of President when the Federal President can no longer exercise his office, but is not referred to as Vice-President.

Austria

The office of Vice President or Vice President does not exist in Austria either. However , in some of his drafts for the Federal Constitutional Act , Hans Kelsen provided for such a function. The Austrian Federal President is represented by the Federal Chancellor or the Presidium of the National Council.

Switzerland

In Switzerland , the Federal President is represented by the Vice-President of the Federal Council.

United States

The Vice President of the United States automatically replaces the President upon death and until the end of the original term of office. He is elected together with the President. In the presidential election campaign, both compete as a team and can only be elected as a couple. The nomination of the vice-presidential candidate by the presidential candidate's team is a far-reaching strategic decision for the election campaign, which is often intended to compensate for deficits of the presidential candidate in certain regions or to address certain interest groups. Often the choice of the running mate for the vice presidential candidate is also made against a competitor in the primaries who achieved good results. If the vice president ceases to exist, the US president appoints a new vice president with the approval of the Senate and the House of Representatives . This is also the case if the previous Vice-President takes over the office of President through the departure of the predecessor.

Argentina

The presidential candidate and the vice-presidential candidate appear in the election campaign as a so-called formula . In the event of the President's death, resignation or absence, the Vice-President shall conduct his office. The Vice President is also the President of the Argentine Senate . In his absence - which is very often the case - the Senate is headed by the Provisional President of the Senate ( Presidente Provisorio del Senado ). The latter takes over the official business of the president if the latter and his vice-president cannot carry out the official business. The last time this happened was in 2001, when President Fernando de la Rúa resigned. Its Vice-President Carlos Álvarez had resigned long before that, in October 2000, and so the Provisional President of the Senate Ramón Puerta had to take over the business.

Russia

In Russia , the office of vice-president was abolished in October 1993 after its only holder, Alexander Ruzkoi , attempted a coup. Since then, the respective Prime Minister has been representing the President .

Namibia

With the third constitutional amendment on October 13, 2014, Namibia created the office of Vice President. This should be elected for the first time on March 21, 2015 on the proposal of the then incumbent President of Namibia with a simple majority by the Namibian National Assembly.

economy

The Vice Presidents typically report directly to the company's President or Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Company vice presidents are seldom the direct successor when a company manager leaves or dies. However, if this happens unexpectedly, two Vice Presidents can act together as President . The new president is then usually appointed by the board of directors .

If there are several Vice Presidents in a company, then there is sometimes a hierarchy within this group, which is indicated for some by adding another name. The remainder are simply VPs. In large organizations there are Assistant Vice President or Associate Vice President below .

  1. First (Executive) Vice President (FVP)
  2. Senior Executive Vice President (SR. EVP)
  3. Executive Vice President (EVP)
  4. Senior Vice President (SVP)
  5. Vice President (GVP)
  6. Additional Vice President (AVP)
  7. Assistant Vice President (Asst. VP)
  8. Joint Vice President (Jt. VP)
  9. Associate Vice President

Large stockbrokers and investment banks typically have multiple vice presidents in each branch. This is more of a marketing initiative and says less about the management position in the company (so-called title inflation). For example (as of the end of 2011) of the approximately 33,000 employees of the investment bank Goldman Sachs, 12,000 are "Vice Presidents".

In unions there can be an elected vice president . Many companies have a large number of Vice Presidents (VP) in administration, each with responsibility for a specific department, such as Vice President for Finance for a finance director.
