Kaustinen [ ˈkɑu̯stinɛn ] ( Swedish. Kaustby ) is a municipality in western Finland with 4273 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the Middle Ostrobothnia landscape 45 km southeast of Kokkola . Neighboring communities of Kaustinen are Kokkola in the northeast, Halsua in the southeast, Veteli in the south and Kronoby in the west. The community is monolingual in Finnish .
Kaustinen is best known for its folk music festival , which takes place every July . In addition, a chamber music week is organized in Kaustinen every January . Kaustinen describes itself as a "music community" and has a violin in its coat of arms. The main attraction of Kaustinen is the wooden church, completed in 1777 and rebuilt in 1859 . The landscape of Perhonjoki, which flows through the municipality, with its fields and villages on the river bank has been officially recognized as an ensemble of cultural and historical value.
In the local elections in Finland 2012 , the base Finns achieved their best result nationwide with 37.3% in Kaustinen.
