origin of the name

Origin of the French name Troisvierges (literally “three virgins”): Already in Greek and Roman mythology there were the Moiren (also Moren), goddesses of fate, who give people a share in life. Usually they were called Klotho , Lachesis and Atropos . However, it is more likely that in Ulflingen, as in the surrounding Asselborn, the cult of the three goddesses of the Celtic Treveri has persisted to this day. The Celtic Treverians worshiped their Matres Treverae or Matronae Treverae . Not far from the north of Luxembourg , in the Aachen area , we find traces of the matron cult , especially among the Germanic Ubi . According to current scholarly opinion, the cult of the three goddesses is a Celto-Germanic cult that was particularly popular in the Gallo-Roman era. In order to promote Christianization , Pope Gregory I converted the pagan cult into the veneration of the three saints "FIDES, SPES et CARITAS" ( faith, hope and love ) . Troisvierges was known as the pilgrimage site of the three saints as far as Belgium ( Wallonia ), hence the French name (Nous allons aux Trois-Vierges) .

The German name, as well as the Luxembourgish Ulflingen or Ëlwen , are derived from Ulf, or Elf or Alb, which means elves. Folk tales have always reported that the village was founded by elves . The suffix ingen indicates a Germanic settlement, which is obvious with the settlement of the region by Germanic Franks .

history

Troisvierges is mentioned for the first time in 1353 under the name Ulvelingen. This name still exists in German today (Ulflingen). Ulflingen was a well-known pilgrimage site in the 17th century and a Franciscan monastery was established there in 1641. During this time the French name of the village Troisvierges was also created (see origin of the name).

Troisvierges experienced a significant economic and demographic boom in the 19th century. This was connected with the construction of the Luxembourg – Spa railway line and with the branch line in the direction of Aachen ( Vennbahn ). The latter was shut down, dismantled since 1954 and converted into the Vennbahnradweg . On August 1, 1914, this small traffic junction in the then neutral Grand Duchy was occupied by a company of the 69th Infantry Regiment under the command of Lieutenant Feldmann, according to orders and according to plan. With this first German military border violation before the declaration of war on France, the First World War began in the west and the support of France by British troops.
