The Deutsches Milchkontor (DMK) is one of Germany's largest dairy company . It was created through the merger of the two cooperatively organized North German companies Humana Milchunion and Nordmilch , which were already the largest German milk processors.

history

On February 3, 2011, the agricultural representatives of Nordmilch eG approved the merger of Nordmilch AG and Humana Milchindustrie GmbH to form DMK Deutsches Milchkontor GmbH with 98.5%. The comrades of Humana eG and the producers' cooperative Bad Bibra, as co-owners of Humana Milchindustrie GmbH, had already approved the merger of their operational subsidiary into the largest German milk processor. The merger took place retrospectively as of July 1, 2010. Joint business operations commenced on May 1, 2011. According to press reports, around 6.7 billion kilos of milk, produced by over 11,000 farmers, were being processed in the companies combined under DMK at the time of the merger. The two companies had already planned a merger in 2004, but it failed. Nevertheless, they worked closely together, including by pooling sales in Nordkontor-Milch GmbH in 2009.

On March 10, 2012, it was announced that the cooperative shareholders with around 11,000 members were also to be merged. On June 20, 2012, the representatives of Nordmilch eG and Humana Milchunion eG voted for the merger with 100% and 98.2%, respectively. In May 2012, around 92 percent of the representatives of the Bad Bibra eG dairy cooperative were in favor of a merger.

In November 2012 the company acquired a majority stake in the North Rhine-Westphalian company Rosen Eiskrem , which is to be merged with DMK Eis GmbH in the medium term . This made DMK the largest ice cream producer in Germany. The Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover of Rosen Eiskrem GmbH in Waldfeucht and Rosen Eiskrem Süd GmbH, based in Nuremberg, on March 27, 2013.

In 2013 the company was honored by the DLG with the “European Dairy Award 2013” for entrepreneurial performance at the International Green Week Berlin .

In March 2016, the European Commission granted unconditional approval to take over the second largest Dutch cheese producer DOC Kaas by way of a merger. DOC Kaas becomes a full subsidiary, but operates independently and retains its cooperative structure.

In response to reduced milk volumes, the DMK Group announced in June 2017 that the plants in Rimbeck and Bad Bibra should no longer be operated. At the Nordhackstedt site in Schleswig-Holstein, the packaging of cold cuts is also to be discontinued. The reason given is the termination of milk producers up to 1.7 billion kilograms of milk in the next two years.

The Deutsche Milchkontor has significantly increased the proportion of GMO-free milk. In the case of GMO-free milk, it is excluded that the milk comes from cows that receive such feed.

On February 28, 2020, the Deutsche Milchkontor announced the return of the Bremerland brand .
