The Zeven Jewish cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Zeven ( Rotenburg (Wümme) district , Lower Saxony ). It is a protected cultural monument .

description

On the 251 m² cemetery, which is almost square in shape and located in the "Kleine Ahe" forest, there are 9 tombstones for Jews from Zeven and the surrounding area who died between 1886 and 1934. There are 16 individual and two family graves. What is unusual for the old Jewish cemeteries in Lower Saxony is that there is also a new grave site from 2010 in the cemetery.

The cemetery is about 20 m south of Bäckerstraße, at the height of the entrance sign and about 30 m west of a soccer field.

history

The first accurately recorded burial on the burial site in the "Kleine Ahe" took place in 1867. During the November pogroms in 1938 the cemetery was desecrated: the tombstones were overturned and the iron grating dismantled. After all, due to hygienic concerns, the leveling of the cemetery, which a Zeven citizen had applied for in 1940, was not carried out. The site was repaired in 1953/54, 1978 and 1986. In 1988 a memorial plaque was erected. In 2008 the city of Zeven erected a memorial stone directly on the cemetery, which names the Jewish citizens who perished in the Holocaust. Today the community of Zeven takes care of the maintenance of the cemetery, which has been owned by the State Association of Jewish Communities of Lower Saxony since 1959 .

literature

In addition, there is a documentation (copy of the German inscriptions, photos and allocation plan), which was made in 1985 and 1997 by Klaus-Peter Schulz (Kreisheimatmuseum Osterholz).
