The headwaters are approx. 1 km east of Hesedorf (Gyhum) , near the road to Abbendorf . Since the floodplain is the source of the Mehde, both are referred to as the Mehde floodplain. The Mehde-Aue is 19.76 km long and covers a catchment area of 97.91 km². The Mehde-Aue has several tributaries, the Abbendorfer Canal flows into the water near Hesedorf, the Buschhorstbach near Gyhum.
