The band was founded in 2002 by Peter Brough (formerly guitarist with Twelve Drummers Drumming ), Ralf Aussem (previously co-founder of Twelve Drummers Drumming and Sun ) and Carlo van Putten. With Hermann Eugster and Kurt Schmidt, two more musicians from Twelve Drummers Drumming now complete the band's line-up.

Carlo van Putten is also the singer at The Convent , who also form the core of In2TheSound , to play with Mike Dudley (original drummer of The Sound ). Furthermore, van Putten continues the project White Rose Transmission after the death of Adrian Borland (The Sound) with many changing artists; of particular note are Mark Burgess from The Chameleons and Marty Willson-Piper from The Church . The band name obviously comes from White Rose Transmission: In 1999 the album 700 Miles Of Desert was released and the last track on it is titled Dead Guitars and was written by Adrian Borland .

“Peter Brough and I met after I heard from a friend of Peter that he loved my singing. Peter liked The Convent, but especially White Rose Transmission, where I also did the vocals. For my part, I liked 12 Drummers Drumming where Peter played guitar. So it made sense to do something together. "

- Carlo van Putten 2007

The Dead Guitars' debut album Airplanes was released on June 1, 2007. In spring 2008 the band accompanied the group The Mission on their European tour as support . So it came to a cooperation with their frontman Wayne Hussey on the album Flags , which was released at the end of 2008 and contains the song Isolation (also represented on the sampler 100% Rock Duets ). On March 28, 2009 the Dead Guitars played in the Tower (Bremen) and The Convent appeared as the opening act. Carlo von Putten often combines his projects; on November 21st, 2009 the Dead Guitars played in Messajero ( Mönchengladbach ) and White Rose Transmission appeared here as the opening act.

In 2011, the album Stranger followed , on which Michael Dempsey , the former bassist of The Cure , played.

From around 2011 to 2015 the Dead Guitars also went on occasional minimalist summer tours, which van Putten then went on with White Rose Transmission .

“It was like magic, not just for the audience. We had unbelievable fun in this atmosphere and the fans were absolutely thrilled .. [..] .. Of course a certain popularity is nice, but the future is clearly directed towards the further development of our music. I don't really care whether the setting is a big stage or the living room at home. We have always been and always will be an independent band, but we still notice that our audience is very diverse. "

- Carlo van Putten 2011

The band has been on pause since mid-2018; however, Aussum, Brough, Eugster and Schmidt appeared without van Putten as "The Wide" with their own material and Brough as a singer.

"Carlo wanted a break and we were eager for a sequel .. [..] .. Over the years we have written a lot of songs that didn't seem particularly suitable for the 'Deadies' repertoire"

- Peter Brough 2018

Peter Brough and Kurt Schmidt contributed to the 2020 EP In June by White Rose Transmission. Ralf Aussum now lives in Berlin and The Wide are looking for a new guitarist who should also become the guitarist of the Dead Guitars.

Reviews

“CONCLUSION: Whether WHITE ROSE TRANSMISSION, DEAD GUITARS, THE CONVENT or BORN FOR BLISS; all these bands play a variant of dark, disturbing and beguiling music that has nothing to do with standardized gothic rock. "

- Jochen König - White Rose Transmission: Spinning Webs At Night (Review) on musikreviews.de

"DEAD GUITARS are the resurrection of authentic indie pop, the reincarnation of great, melancholic wave ballads, the renaissance of the atmospheric" Wall of Sound ", those filigree piled effect guitars that made Ralf Aussem an exceptional guitarist. Also because they blend into clear song structures in an almost surrealistic way and so not only create a timeless sound intensity, but also break with the listening habits of the pop genre - finally! "
